I praise God who gave me birth and mothers from whom all blessings flow. Moses reminded us of the power of motherhood in Deuteronomy 32:18, when he said “you forgot the God who gave you birth.” I am grateful to know God as Mother. Since I was born, I have always appreciated my mother, so it was easy for me to understand the power of God as mother too.
When we talk about a Mother or a Father God, we do not limit God to a sex but envision God in the many ways that God expresses itself. If God is love — what love is greater than a mother’s love for her children?
Nigerians, who are a significant part of my multi-cultural ancestry, teach that long before Christianity, or Buddhism, or Hinduism, or Judaism, or Islam existed, the sky darkened and a large table and a large chair and an immense creation stone manifested.
On the table was a large quantity of earth. Thunder and lightning erupted as Woyengi, Mother of all Creation, descended to sit upon the chair and place her feet on the creation stone.
Out of the earth on the table, she molded human beings and breathed the breath of life into them. and they became living beings. But they were neither men nor women, and so Woyengi made each the sex of their choice. And Woyengi asked them what type of life they wanted to lead. Some asked for riches, some asked for children, some asked for short lives, and all manner of things. And Woyengi asked each one of them by what manner of death they would return to her, and they chose a disease. To all these wishes, Woyengi said so be it.
The Nigerian tribe who remembered Woyengi, like many other ancient civilizations, recognized that when one can feel oneself in relation to life in the same manner as a child with her mother, one is in complete harmony with the universe. Mothers, like the universe that carries our existence and gives birth to its myriad forms, provide us with the realization that we do not merely exist but we are co-creators with life.
We are Spirit giving Shape to Form. We are Infinite Possibility giving Breath to Love. Each and every one of us — regardless of our sex — are mothers because we are co-creators. We are all in the transformational tri-mester of Truth giving birth to a New Heaven and a New Earth.
When God gives birth to us from the infinite womb of creative potential, God is our Mother. When Jesus tells us that he will never leave us, but will be with us always in the form of the Holy Spirit — as our counselor, our teacher and our guide, Jesus is our Mother.
When the Holy Spirit teaches us to express the love that we are; to be supportive; to be protective; to be strong; to be creative, as well as to be receptive to the love and the support and the protection and the divine ideas that we are given from the universe — the Holy Spirit is our Mother.
Jesus expresses the Spirit of the Mother in the story of the Pharisee named Nicodemus, a big ‘wig’ on the Jewish ruling council, who stole out in the middle of the night because he didn’t want any of his elitist friends to see him talking to this radical named Jesus. But Nicodemus confessed to Jesus: “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus told Nicodemus that he needed to celebrate the Divine Mother of Unlimited Power by being reborn. Jesus said: “no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again. ”
Nicodemus didn’t understand. “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus told Nicodemus: “No one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit.” In other words, what are you giving birth to? Is it a consciousness of fear, of limitation, of lack, of doubt? Or is it knowing that wherever you go and whatever you do and however you desire, the Kingdom of God is a Mother that is always there — not only embracing you with her creations but giving you the power to co-create as part of her infinite, inexhaustible source.
God as Mother summons us to stop sitting in the birth canal of infinite possibility and instead move forward into a new consciousness.
In the Book of Revelations, the Prophet talks about a rebirth in consciousness. He talks about pushing through lightning and thunder and wars and rumors of wars and recessions and all kinds of chaos and devils and demons and destruction until he envisions a new realization of Spirit. He says, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. . . . There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
The new heaven and the new earth is not only something that has been here all of the time, but is a place that must unfold from our consciousness. It is that space within where we allow ourselves to be reborn. It is our awakening to the truth of our being. It is the beauty that we bring forth, that arises from who we are. It is the breakthrough that we need, and as the late poet June Jordan says, it is us; “we are the ones that we have been waiting for.”
It is the place that takes us outside of all our self-imposed limitations and moves us beyond what we believe we can do. It shifts our paradigms, re-writes our scripts, re-tells our stories, carries us out of the birth canal of our greatness — aligned with all that Spirit is. With Spirit as Mother, I am no longer pushed by pain but am pulled by the vision of life giving birth to a new me.
I stand in the birth canal of pure possibility, and Divine Mother – like Woyengi — asks me what I want, gives me the endless opportunity of being born again into a new existence. Like my birth mother, Woyengi says: You are inexhaustible supply. You are pure possibility. You are divine source. You are the Kingdom of God. You are the Mother of Miracles. You are the I AM of your Soul calling you. You are connected with the love all of all — those with a new heart, those with a new destiny, those with a new vision, those who have chosen to be reborn again. You are God, creating through you.
Thank you Woyengi.
Thank you Divine Mother.

Thank you Myrtle, and everyone who mothers you, and me.
Happy Mother’s Day.
